School of Civil Engineering

The School of Civil Engineering was founded on the basis of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, established in 1923. Under the long-term endeavor and constant cultivation and innovation of distinguished professors such as Yisheng Mao, Baozhen Jin, Baichuan Xu, Zhiming Liang, Shuxun Liu, Dajun Ding, Fusen Fang, Qianshan Hu, Nianci Tang, Enzhan Bao, Yinyu Li, Zhitao Lv, Yongsheng Jiang, the Descipline of Civil Engineering developed rapidly and extended to the fields of Transportation, Materials Science and Engineering, Environment, Mechanics and Construction Management. In 1997, the School of Civil Engineering was founded based on the former Departments of Civil engineering, Environment Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.

Currently, the School of Civil Engineering consists of 5 departments: Architectural Engineering, Construction & Real Estate, Engineering Mechanics, Bridge & Tunnel & Underground Engineering, Municipal Engineering, and Experimental Center. The total number of faculty and staff is approximately 150, among whom 40 are full-time professors (including 35 Ph.D. supervisors), 50 are associate professors, and all young teachers possess doctoral degrees. The school is academically led by Profs. Zhitao lv (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Zhishen Wu (Outstanding professor of National “Thousands Plan”, Cheung Kong Scholar, National Outstanding Youth Funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China(B)), and Aiqun Li (National Outstanding Teacher, National Outstanding Youth Funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China). This is an outstanding teaching & research group backboned by national innovative teaching teams.

The school has 2 post-doctoral stations of the first level disciplines, 2 PhD programs of the first level disciplines, 12 PhD programs of the second level disciplines, 12 Master programs and 4 undergraduate disciplines. There are over 2000 students together, and the school enrolls more than 280 full-time postgraduates each year. Training teachers, visiting researchers and postdoctoral researchers are also welcome. In the Assessments of Ministry of Education by Graduate Education Development Centre for 2007-2009, the discipline of civil engineering at the Southeast University ranked as No. 5 in P.R. China.

The  disciplines of civil engineering, mechanics, and construction management. structural engineering are among the National Key Disciplines, and the discipline of disaster prevention and reduction is being nurtured as one of the candidates for National Key Disciplines by Jiangsu Province. The school has key disciplines for “211” and “985” Projects, key disciplines for the “Revitalization Plan” of the Ministry of Education, key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the national Civil Engineering experiment demonstration center, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Engineering Mechanics Analysis and “Cheung Kong Scholar” professorship. The discipline of civil engineering and construction management are one of the first to qualify the National Civil Engineering and Construction Management Assessment in 2000, and have passed this national assessment for three times so far. The discipline of civil engineering is awarded the Famous Brand Discipline of Jiangsu province in 2005 and National First-class Characteristic Discipline in 2007. The discipline of construction management is awarded Characteristic Discipline of Jiangsu province in 2005 and National First-class Characteristic Discipline Development Center in 2009.

The school also hosts a Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education, Prestress Research Center of Jiangsu province, an International Institute for Urban Systems Engineering, Institute of Civil Engineering, Institute of Mechanics, Institute of Prestress Engineering, Research Center of Seismic Strengthening & Disaster Reduction, Institute of Municipal Engineering, Institute of Construction Management & Real Estate, Institute of Project Management, Institute of Construction Supervision, Institute of Property and Facility Management, Institute of Spatial Structure and Form, Institute of Old Bridges, and etc. The school is also equipped with a large-scale structural testing lab, prestress lab, mechanical lab, hydraulics lab and project management lab for the purposes of teaching and research. The historical school library contains a very large number of professional books.

Up to 2010, the school has graduated more than 13000 graduates, among whom over 1300 were awarded  Master degrees and over 300 were awarded Doctoral degrees. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in academic research, teaching reformation, and textbook composion. The school has totally been awarded 7 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 27 first/second prizes of Provincial Science and Technology Progress, 3 national excellence teaching prizes, 5 national excellent textbook prizes, 5 national outstanding quality courses, 18 first/second prizes of provincial teaching achievement and 6 provincial excellent courses. The school has also sponsored more than 12 international conferences. Over a thousand research papers have been published by first-class domestic and overseas journals, and more than 190 textbooks and academic books are published as well.

The school keeps closely up with the academic frontiers of the related disciplines and inter-disciplines, broadens and strengthens the academic communication and cooperation domestically and abroad. Extensive cooperative relationships have been established between the school and overseas famous universities and/or institutes. Moreover, a number of excellent young teachers and researcher have been sent out for training, visiting and attending international conferences abroad. And the academic level and influence of the school are thus enhanced, markedly.
