Discipline of Structural Engineering

(A National Key Discipline)

1. Introduction

 The discipline of Structural Engineering was founded in 1923 and has a long history. It is one of the first PhD programs established in China and one of the national key disciplines. Over its long history, it has successfully set up its leading position of its kind domestically. The discipline is entitled to confer doctoral degrees and hosts a Level 1 postdoctoral mobile station in civil engineering. It also hosts a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education and is granted to sponsor professorship. It is one of the nation’s “Ninth Five-Year”, “Fifth Five-Year”, “985” project and “211” project construction base. Moreover, it is also a key discipline of the Revitalization Action Plan of the Ministry of Education.

Professor Lv Zhitao is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the academic leader within the discipline. The rest faculty members are also first-class, creative, unified and hard-working. At present, all faculties are directed by the academician and most of them are PhD degrees holders. In recent years, the discipline has received many awards including one first-prize and two third-prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and three first-prizes of the Ministry of Provincial Science and Technology Progress. They have published more than 30 monographs. Around 57 papers have been published in international core journals and 44 of them were published in the most advanced journals of the subject. Around 10 national patents have been granted. Currently, the faculties are undertaking a number of projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, national “973” plan, “863” plan and Provincial and ministerial research plans. They have successfully resolved a number of key technical problems under the support of these projects.

2. The major areas, advantages and characteristics

The major research areas of the discipline include

(1)   Modern prestressed construction system, theory of computation and design procedures

(2)   Anti-seismic architecture, wind force proofing design procedures and the study of shock absorption and vibration control

(3)   and the computational theory and applications of long-span, super-high and composite structural systems and cable-membranes

(4)   Design theory of underground structures, engineering monitoring, construction technology and its application, structural analysis theory and calculation technology

(5)   Theory of analyzing engineering materials and structural damage

(6)   Structure’s detection, assessment, evaluation and consolidation

For a long time, the discipline has been emphasizing on the dynamic integration of basic research, application research as well as the commercialization of research findings. All the above six major research areas have already produced a number of research achievements, especially in the area of concrete and prestressed concrete structures. These achievements are both domestically and internationally recognized. Important theoretical significance and practical guidance on engineering construction have been produced.
