Discipline of Solid Mechanics

 

1. A Brief Introduction to the Discipline

Mechanics is a highly applied fundamental discipline in all areas of engineering technology. It takes engineering institutions as background, mechanics theory as foundation, and the latest scientific and technological achievements as basic means. Solid mechanics studies the emergence of modern engineering technology via analyzing, modeling, simulating and experimentally testing the basic principles of mechanics.

2. Main research areas, advantages and features of the discipline

(1) Modern testing and experimental methods of mechanics

The experimental studies of fine structures and nondestructive testing oriented to engineering application are currently one of the best in China. The testing of mechanical performance in the field of high temperature creep deformation and microelectronic devices and micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) is their expertise. For years, the faculty members working on this area has been maintaining close relationship with colleges and universities of the United States, Singapore and Hong Kong. This research area has completed more than 20 research projects and published more than 100 papers, with 45 indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP.

(2)Damage mechanics and its application in structural damage analysis.

The main research topics in this area include: damage of engineering materials and structures under various conditions, fracture and failure behavior, application of structural analysis and evaluation. The main characteristics are described as follows. The internal structure and material defects and damages are taken typically into account. Latest technology of static and dynamic testing for the damage of engineering materials, fracture process and mechanisms of macro micro mechanical properties are all adopted in the research. Constitutive model of materials damage is systematically established. At the same time, the computational methods, the evolution of damaging process, crack propagation, structural modeling necessitated for characterizing the damage and failure of complex engineering structures are also their focuses. In recent years, 8 national and provincial level research projects and more than 70 papers with 30 indexed by SCI and EI have been accomplished in this area.

(1)    Life prediction and reliability assessment of engineering structures

The main features of this research area lie in assessment of large-scale engineering structures 朗读with the aid of neural network theory and massive testing data of industrial health. This major task of the research activities in this area is to analyze the reliability of industrial equipment and accurately predict its service life. Providing reliable proof for the continuous use of important industrial equipment is the top priority. In recent years, more than 20 papers have been published in domestic and international journals.
