1. Introduction to the discipline

The history of our school's Environmental Engineering major can date back to the Health Engineering major of the National Central University in 1940s. In the late 1970s, Southeast University, an integral component of national education system, was one of the earliest institutions that established professional Environmental Engineering major. The Environmental Engineering discipline has undertaken a lot of tasks in scientific research and technical services in the areas of water pollution control and treatment, air pollution control, coal conversion process and exhaust gas pollution prevention technology, solid waste disposal and resource utilization, and molecular toxicology of environmental pollutants. It also has finished a number of projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, the national research plans and province-level scientific and technological research plans. Currently, is actively participating in National Key Basic Research Development Program (973), National High Technology Project (863), National Natural Science Foundation as well as the provincial and ministerial level research plans.

2. The main research areas, advantages and features of the discipline

(1) Theories and technologies of water pollution control and treatment. The major research topic of this area is the micro-contamination purification technology of drinking water. Up to present, two national research projects, four National Natural Science Foundation projects and four provincial level projects have been undertaken. Relying on theses research projects, they have established both domestic and international advantages in the field, especially in phosphorus and nitrogen removal technology for urban sewage and equipment and process intelligent control. The total research funds reaches several million in RMB.

 (2) Air Pollution Control: relying on several research projects about PFBC-CC dust removal and desulfurization of clean coal combustion technology, this research area has successfully produced high-efficiency pv-type cyclone separator, horizontal micro-multicyclone, and desulfurization efficiency and Nox emissions. The research products are capable of satisfying the most strict emission concentration worldwide. In the meantime, cyclic fluidized-bed semidry desulphurization, fluidized absorption flue gas desulfurization and denitrification and limestone injection dust tail of humidification activation desulfurization have completed laboratory research and pilot field test and passed the provincial assessment. Several national invention patents and utility model patents have been granted in the area.

(3) Solid waste treatment, disposal and recycling. This area has successfully undertaken six basic research projects on the topic of waste incineration. Fluidized bed combustion with flying ash recycling and bottom feed re-burning technology have been developed. They are capable of processing more than thirty tons of coal-gangue annually. A second prize of Science and Technology Progress of Jiangsu province has been received. The faculty members working on this area have successfully developed the country’s biggest papermaking sludge fluidized bed incinerator and high-concentration organic liquid waste incinerator. Furthermore, the second generation municipal solid waste cryogenic gasification and melting temperature incineration have been carried out. One national invention patent and two utility model patents are pending for approval at present.
